  1. This semester has been really tough and contains a lot of stress. I am taking 6 classes not including the 2 that I already finished in the intersession course. My hardest class in this semester is physics 190, that class makes me very confused and lost. I do not even know where to begin with it. He does not do any exams just quizzes and finales, which makes it even tougher. My second hardest class is engineering. The teacher is very strict and asks for a lot of homework. The class also is a 3 hours class and he makes us work so hard in those 3 hours to the point where we get really exhausted. Other than those two classes, I really like and enjoy my other 4 classes. They are so much fun to be in and very interesting, and enjoyable. I actually learn a lot of new things in my classes, things about my self and about the world, which makes everything a lot more interesting that it is. My goal for this semester is to maintain the highest grades possible in order to raise my GPA because my plan is to apply to San Diego State University next fall.

    1. You have a heavy load this semester, but seem to be managing it well. Tutoring is available for physics and engineering. Check it out if you need help. Engineering is a difficult major, but rewarding, so hang in there.

  2. At times this semester is going just fine but then other times it can be really stressful. I am taking four classes this semester and all of them have plenty of work. If I don't set time aside to work on my assignments everyday then things get a little bit chaotic. The challenge that I am facing is procrastination. At the beginning of the semester I was doing pretty good about doing my assignments a while before the due date. However, I am now starting to fall behind and wait for the last minute to do my homework. That puts a lot of stress on me but I am the only one who can fix that problem. The “how to change a habit” assignment has helped me a lot with this problem but I tend to fall off track with it some days. The class that I tend to fall behind in is my Chicano History class. I have three different books that I have to read every week. If I don't do my readings for one week them I am extremely behind in that class. A solution I have come up with for this problem is reading the pages that are due from one book in one day. The next day I will read the second book, then third book the next day. By taking this semester one day at a time I know I can successfully get through it.

I can completely relate to this. I have sometimes gotten on this procrastination train myself. Not so much because I am being lazy, as I think that's not why you are doing it either. It appears that you have a lot of things to do and your days are very busy. The "how to change a habit" paper helped me as well. However, my procrastination, as i mentioned before, is more from having so many things to do in my day. If you are anything like me, reading and recalling information can sometimes be a big deal. Especially when it has to do with three different books. I was assigned a book in my English class and instead of pacing myself to read it in sections, I decided to read it all in three days in order to get it out of the way. Chicano History class can be a very boring class with so much of it not having the excitement we think it's going to have when we sign up for it. I know I had a rough time at the beginning, until it got to part of the history where I was really interested in knowing about it. Try to pace yourself and write out a schedule for your classes and the assignments. I find that I still procrastinate, but it helps me to remember that I have to complete the assignment. Or better yet, have someone else hold you accountable. One way to do this is to set up a system where you have to pay this person for not completing your assignment. Try it!

    2. I agree with taking it one day at a time. You are aware of the procrastination problem and are taking steps to make it better. Keep going!

  3. When I started going back to school last semester it had been five years since I had dropped out of CSUSM. My experience there wasn't bad I just wasn't ready to continue my education yet. I wanted to get a job and earn some money because I was tired of being broke. Eventually I got around to going back to school last year but I was hard for me to get used to having a job and going to school. I adjusted to my schedule and ended up with a GPA of 3.0. so I decided to take more classes this semester. But one of my roadblocks was that I would be extremely busy going to school and working full time. It was difficult to at first because of the literally having no time to myself and barely having enough time to do home work. It was really killing, i had to drive up to Julian and work two jobs one right after the other Friday through Sunday and I also had to drive back up there on Tuesday to work. I also had school the reset of the week. I eventually got a job working in downtown for four days a week, working as a cook in a café. This really freed up a lot of time for me to have a social life and do school work.

    1. I can certainly identify with your struggles Shane, working full time as well as trying to take a full college course load is rough. Like you, I don’t really have a choice as I have to support my family, and at times (such as tonight) I do find myself wishing that I had been able to attend college earlier before I had kids – it would have been so much easier! There are some advantages to getting in some work experience before college though, you and I will just need to make our experiences work for us. For one thing, we’re familiar with deadlines right? I have also noticed that most older returning students seem to “want it” more desperately, and are more determined to succeed in college than those who are just coming out of high school. There are exceptions to this of course; it’s always dangerous to generalize. I have no doubt that you’re going to be successful in college though, the fact that you’ve had the determination to come back after five years proves it. Good luck!

  4. If I had a friend a friend interviewing for an important position I would give a few process of advice.  First I would make sure my friend knows that a resume gives the very first impression to your future employer, so that they take qualify time to work on it. Not leaving out any awards, special talents, degrees, out qualifications. Along with the resume I would make site my friend had a cover letter in which they attached the resume. In the cover letter I would have them include why they would be an asset to the company, they're experience, how they heard of the position, and lastly requesting an interview.  Next I world tell them to research the position they're applying for to make site they know the in's and out's of their job. That way when it comes time to interview they are well prepared. They can also prepare by anticipating interview questions so they can practice their answers ahead of time. Lastly I would make sure that my friend sent a thank you note following the interview. That way  you leave a good impression and the employer is sure to think about you again. Other candidates may not think of doing this so that would be a great heads up for you in comparison to the other prospects.

  6. What is your generation? Baby Boomer? Generation X? New Millennial? Generation Z? How will your generation affect your future career choices?

My generation is Generation Z. We are the start of generations with shorter time periods and have always lived in the world of internet and technology. One in every four of us are under 18 years old and 45% of us are minorities. Therefore we are the most diverse group. Technology will continue to influence us as a generation. We are not like our elders and do not believe in the "American Dream", we are more realistic. I believe that our challenges are that we are too technology dependent and also our lack of the normal two-parent households affect our way of life. Our best qualities is that our generation hopes to use technology to change the world.

My generation will continue to grow in diversity and in developing technology. This will have a minimal effect on my career choice since my career choice (real estate agent) is a career that involves being in close proximity with my clients. This is one of the reasons I chose this career, it is almost timeless. I also know that with the growing threat and fear of terrorism Americans will be looking for security in their homes. I also want to become a qualified nurse at some point later in my life. Technology will modernize the job but the need for being in close proximity with patients will give this career longevity.

  7. This semester has unfortunately been very tough for me because of my situation that I am in. I never would have thought I would have needed to change my original plans because of the tragic I have got in to. The work assignments are not that difficult but it is time consuming and you really have to know what you want your future to be so you can really understand these chapters. I know that I don't really have computer access so I do try my best to make my time wisely so that way I can finish my work and assignments that are due. Other challenges I'm going through is studying because I have so many programs that I have to attend and by the time I study I'm very exhausted but I just stay up late and I try my best to finish what I can. Even though I do have a crazy schedule I do give my 100 % into all my work and assignment. I'm the type that likes to organized and to have my stuff due on time and so this is a big challenge for me to not be able to do those things.

  8. So far this semester is going well. It’s my last semester at Cuyamaca College and I will hopefully be transferring to SDSU in the fall, so I’m just wrapping up the last few courses I need in order to graduate. None of my classes are particularly challenging this semester, although as always I face a considerable amount of writing in online courses, which can be very time intensive. As far as challenges; I do hate being tired all the time; I study early before work and then again at night after I have spent time with my family, (a personal commitment of mine) so by the end of the week I am usually something of a wreck both physically and mentally. I’ve been going at this pace for over two years though so I’m pretty used to it by now – which is a good thing as I still have several years of upper division college ahead of me. I deal with the stress by thinking of each week as being a challenge I have to overcome, and each week I try to complete my college requirements with enough time to spare that I can afford to relax and take a few hours for myself on Sunday. “Me time” does not always work out as I do stuff with my kids on the weekend as well, but it’s a goal, and it feels great when I manage it.

  9. If a friend of mine was going on a job interview then I would have several suggestions. Most likely the employer has a copy of their resume as that is probably how they got the job, but it is strongly recommended to bring a second copy of the resume to have on hand and that resume should be printed on professional resume paper. In addition, dress attire is very important during an interview. It is always best to dress appropriately for the position you are applying for. If a friend was applying for an auto mechanic position to change oil on cars then a suit and tie would be strange. On the other hand, if a friend was applying for a position as a top bank manager, then a really nice suit would be appropriate. During the interview it is always best to smile, make eye contact and just to simply do the best you can, knowing that nobody is perfect. It is always a good idea to practice and review some answers you may have to some standard interview questions. Lastly, sometimes employers ask what made you want to apply to our company, therefore it is a good idea to research the company before the interview so the person can have a professional answer and be prepared.

  10. If I had a friend interviewing for a job I would give out a few pointers and tips on how to have a successful interview. One thing I would defiantly say is to make sure the resume looks good. Having a great resume opens the door to a lot of things because its basically summarizing all your skills on one page. When it comes to the interview, confidence is key. Having confidence shows the employer that your capable of completing the task and that you know that you can perform the job, (even if you don’t). Dressing the part, arriving on time and having good manners and a nice small conversation before getting to the questions also says a lot about yourself, so something so small can also play a big role in you career search.

  11. Job interviews are very important, and it is vital to make sure you are ready for it. First off, I would make sure that my resume is organized and straight to the point – this will help when interviewers or the employer is reading your resume. You want to make sure that it is easily understandable. Make sure you list all your strengths and characteristics that you think will help the company that you are trying to join. Another tip would be to dress professionally. Also, I would listen to the interviewer closely. Very many people that go in their interview don’t necessarily answer the interviewer’s question and that is a huge problem – you want to be ready for their questions. If you’re a generally nervous person, I would prepare by having a friend ask me interviewing questions. Also, make sure that you have room to grow. In that I mean, every job is different. You always want them to see that you can learn something new if needed.

  12. I am in the New Millennial generation. Generally, this generation strongly feels for individualism. I feel that every individual, whether who they choose to be and what they believe in should have freedom in expressing themselves. We like being liked for who we are. Each of us individual is an important facet of the growing job community. I believe being different can affect my future career choice greatly because it will set me apart from everyone else. It will show my strengths and the qualities I have that will help a company. We are also respectful of others as we want to be respected as well. We are very technologically savvy which is very important as jobs nowadays are turning to technology.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am apart of Generation Z. We do not believe in the "American Dream", greatly influenced by technology, and is an age where girls are expected to get a degree. I believe that this generation is highly influenced by technology and believe technology can change the world. Even though technology can be a big distraction at times, it is very useful and helps most of the time. Technology is everything now.

  14. There are many tips I would give a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important. One, would be to research about the job and company before the interview to really know what you are getting yourself into and what they would like to expect from an employee.employee. Two, would be to make sure you bring your resume in a folder, and to be early to give off a very clean and neat impression. Third, I would say is to dress appropriately, look sharp and professional.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Its pretty clear at this point that technology will have a big part in the future of careers and the job industry. Generation Z, my generation, generally have a much easier time figuring out and adapting to new technology, so I believe that we will have a much better time than the generations previous in fitting in to our potential careers. The reading also commented on how Biology is forecasted to grow a lot in the next few years, which I think is very interesting and intriguing. I have been thinking about biology for a potential major.

  16. So far this semester I've realized that I've probably bit off more than I can chew, not really with school, but with work. I was recently promoted and have had much more hours a week. However, i need to make sure that I'm focusing on doing well in school and not as much in working. Work comes second and I've started to put it first. If I want to do well I need to devote more time to school. Trying to do both has really drained me; I've been really tired and kinda irritable lately. So I think I need to cut back my hours in order to concentrate more on what should come first, which is my education.

  17. When my friend find a good job and need my advice, I should tell him many things that benefit him before he interviewed for a job. The important thing is that He should have a good resume that gives a good impression about him and a good vision. The resume should be one page, neat, use a good quality paper, and organize it with important information. He should start in his name and address with the level of his education. He should write about his experience and the strength points he has. He should be honest, and have references that praise him, and give good ideas about him. He should have important information about the job or company he applied before the interview, and be ready to answer all the questions in reasonable way. He should have self-confident to give the interviewer the idea that he is ready and efficient for this job.

  18. The level of education is very important in my generation. They care about their grade and how they continue their studies in order to receiving a college degree and having work that changes the world. They always look for higher level of education that makes them ready for a good career. A balanced lifestyle is so important to them it means they value the family and balance their time between outside and their families. The trend that affects my future is increased need for education. In order to have a good opportunities and a good career, we should increase our education in the field that we choose. When we continue our study and receive a college degree, this will affect the career that we chose and our income. The career that needs the college degree gives a good payment, and the career that needs the master degree gives more payment and so on. I want to continue my education and have a college degree in order to have a good career and increase our income.

  19. So this semester isn't going as well as it could be right now. There are something I am just not used to. When I miss an assignment and everyone else turns it in I can of get demotivated and end up not turning it in. I really should turn them in even if it is late to at least get some credit but I don't. Sometimes I just don't know what to do. I joke about dropping out because I don't think I can handle it but I feel as though there is some truth behind what I say. I really want to complete college but I don't know if I can handle it. That is kind of a lie because I know I can handle it but I am very afraid of failure and letting my mom down. She is so proud of me because I am in college. So if I were to fail I feel as though it would be devastating to her because of how she sees me. I know its tuff but I am still going to try my best this semester and for the rest of college and beyond.

  20. I personally believe that I am in the Gen Z. During this growing generation we have seen a lot of advancements in technology. For example, the phone. When the first cell phone came out it was a brick, it was massive. Nowadays phones and smaller and more portable then its ancestors. This growth in tech is never going to stop. With the demand for newer and bette stuff, technology will be there wether you like it or not. My generation will affect future career choices a lot. Instead of having to meet face to face for an interview, maybe one day we will be able to sit in front of a monitor that projects our whole body as if though we were actually there because of reasons. Who knows what kind of tech we can come up to help doctors during surgery. We already have small cameras that go into the body to help doctors see what they are doing inside their patient. Also there is is website that allows you to pay for classes taught by professionals for only 400$ a year. That saves a lot of money and allows you to learn exactly what you want to learn on your own schedule. This is the kind of stuff we have now can you imagine what my generation will come up with in the next 15 years? It is insane to think how rapidly we are growing.

  21. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?

This semester is going quite well so far. I am acing all but one of my courses and I am happy with the progress I am making. This is my last semester of junior college and I excited at the prospect of what universities I will be attending come fall. I must say however that I have been feeling a bit unmotivated as of late. Unmotivated isn't quite the right word, more like just plain lazy. This reminds me of senior year of high school in that much of it is simply a formality. All my grades have been submitted and unless a spring grades request is required this semester will only matter for my completion of 60 units. Nevertheless, I hold myself to a higher standard and will not settle for anything less than a 4.0 for this semester. I am trying to establish new habits everyday and am making good use of the little free time that I have. I am finding that with school it has become much more difficult to go to the gym on a consistent basis and for this I am truly troubled. I do have faith that I will adjust and with daylight savings my day will certainly be a bit longer.

I would have to say that the semester is going well for me as of right now. I have high grades in all of my classes and am feeling in control at this particular moment in time. I know that if I continue with my current form I will be on track to meet my goals. The only difficulties I am having with this semester is the time constraints. Being that I am taking 18 units and working at the same time has proved difficult, I know that school is more important which is why I've dedicated most of my time to get good grades but that means I am having to sacrifice working and making money. I think that if I schedule my time better I can devote more time to school and work.

  24. One of the issues of career trends in the future was that many jobs are going to continue to be outsourced. This is done so that companies can avoid paying high costs for labor. Industries such as manufacturing of certain products are also going to see many jobs lost to machines that can do things more efficiently and at a much lower cost. I understand these issue and I am frightened for the many people who are going to lose their jobs. I know that the career I am going for is not going to be outsourced or taken over by machines as I am going into law. Many career paths including law are assessed to be longstanding in this globalized world.

This past fall semester I had taken only two classes, one on campus and one online. This semester I decided I would take an additional class because I thought I would be able to handle a few more units. So far I have been successful with my online classes. However, I started to feel that the information for my on campus class, financial accounting was not sticking, even with my detailed notes I take. Coming from a background working in an accounting department for a company, I came in thinking this class would be a piece of cake. I started to realize during the lectures I was trying to apply the material I was learning with the work I currently do. I also noticed since I was thinking about work during the lectures I was only remembering a few things from the lectures. The following week I decided to not think about work during my lectures. Additionally, the moment I realized why lectures were not sticking and found a solution to fix the problem has helped me tremendously. I hardly think about work now and I have been able to answer the majority of the questions my professor asks about the material we are learning.

  27. My generation is the New Millennial. This generation is the generation of expansion. This generation is better at working in teams and getting rid of old institutions that don't work anymore. The best qualities are the drive to be unique and independent. This generation is also more ethnically diverse than previous generations and more open to connect with others. The challenges are being able to get into colleges without having to compete with thousands of other students along with the increasing struggle to be able to afford college. Another challenge my generation faces is that the world of lifetime careers are going to be slim to none.

  28. My advice for my friend before he/she even got an interview is to remind them that it is their first impression on their employer and that it can make or break your chance to get the job. As for the job interview always dress appropriately and relax. Always try and think of what questions that the employer would ask you ahead of time so when you are being questioned you aren't as stressed out about it. Do some research on the company you are trying to get into. Employers are more likely to hire someone who has some background knowledge because it shows them that they really are interested in the job and not just trying to get hired just cause.

Because I grew up with technology I feel that it does push me to look for a career dealing with this because I feel much more comfortable with this. Next I would tell them to be honest and showcase their strengths without being too flashy. So far, this semester has been my best one yet. I really enjoy my classes, all my professors are very welcoming. Currently, I have been challenged with learning ASL (American Sign Language). I can deal with this by going to tutoring or seeking help from my classmates.

What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?
I would tell them to do their research, rehearse, then relax. Practice ahead of time with sample questions and different interview styles. During the interview, be tactful, sincere, polite and knowledgeable about the organization and what you have to offer it and to always send a follow-up thank you letter to the interviewer.

My ASL class is somewhat of a struggle for me but I know I can do it and I will not give up. I am enjoying this semester and all of my teachers are really nice and understanding. I cant wait for my future.

  38. Sometimes I get stressed out when it comes to school or if I have a lot of assignments due at one time but I don't get discouraged and I still continue to work hard because I know I can and everyone who has ever doubted me will get proven wrong because I have set a goal and I will reach it !

  39. This semester is going okay for me. I’m taking 16 units at Cuyamaca College. I was afraid at first because I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I work full time and have a really hard time fitting homework and study time into my schedule. But luckily I’ve been maintaining. I enrolled to get an education so I can finish up my general education and transfer to get a professional degree. I feel like working full time and going to school full time is a big roadblock. I enrolled to be a full time student so I can finish up really quickly. It’s a big challenge I face but I know an education is worth more than anything else in the world. School can get you far in life. Working can be a big distraction when you’re studying. I feel people shouldn’t have to work while getting an education, but unfortunately people need to work to survive and pay the bills. I’ve really considered cutting my job into part time because it’s just too much on my plate. I know an education is key to success and I need to really need to finish up and think and plan my life for the future.

  40. This has actually been a pretty stressful semester for me. At the outset I thought I was finished with all of my requirements and I was applying for graduation when my counselor told me that due to my academic renewal I did of my grades from the year 2000 to bring up my GPA I still needed 6.5 units to graduate so I had to rush to get into classes and was waitlisted. I was lucky though, I was able to get into the three classes I was waitlisted for that satisfied the requirements, this one included and, I am just trying to do my best balancing surprise classes with my work and busy home life schedule. I guess the hardest parts so far have been the extra time I have to dedicate to classes that I thought I was going to have to put towards other tasks. One class I waitlisted for an took was only a month long class so the assignment requirements and deadlines were right on top of each other. I’ll just be glad to get through the semester. I hate to sound like such a complainer, I do also find that being “under the gun” as the saying goes can also help me prioritize so there is that and the next few months will likely go by quickly.

  41. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?

This semester is a little different than the last, considering I am balancing school, work, and a month old baby. Not that they are too much to handle. Just a lot of time management is in effect. I deal with work as anyone would, just going in and getting out. School gets a little harder each week to deal with because the baby always seems to sense when I just sit down to do the work online and suddenly wakes up. I try to balance all of my daily tasks to make sure that my work is done to ensure that my future is bright.

  42. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?

My tip to a friend would be to make sure that a family member or friend looks over any resume or cover letter to correct or get other opinions on what to add or what to take out. Before the interview, I would have someone go over any questions that might be asked during an interview, and get feed back on their answers to ensure that they are fully ready to give their best during the interview.

  44. So far this semester has been going great. Because it's my last semester, I didn't have to take a lot of classes, only the few remaining so I've been having more free time than I usually do from the other regular school semesters. My main challenge has been having both of my two classes online. It's stressful because I'm not very computer savvy so I get anxious when I turn in assignments because I feel like I might have pressed the wrong button and not actually sent it in. To deal with this, my kids helped me navigate blackboard the first two weeks until I feel like I have gotten a handle on it.

  45. A tip I would give to a friend before a big interview is to not stress about it. If they stress about it, they won't get enough sleep the night before and will be groggy and tired when they go into the interview. When they interview, they should try not to overthink it because that would lead to stress, if they don't overthink it then they will go in and not freeze up, but instead act naturally. By not letting themselves get stressed they can go in and be confident about their chances so they'll answer better to the questions asked.
