Chapter 6, Managing Time and Money, March 9-15

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text. For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

For your second post, read another student's post and make a comment about it. Sometimes it is helpful to read about other students' goals and how they are managing to accomplish them. The first post can be longer and the second one can be shorter.

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful. Then I taught the topic for 30 years. I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text. I found myself distracted by things around the home. I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores. Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do. It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks. I still found it difficult to get started. I used the idea of a leading task. I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write. Then I would refine the writing the next day. Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written. Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country. The CollegeScope material is my latest project.

Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it. Now it is your turn. Tell about something you accomplished in the past or something you hope to accomplish in the future. See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. I accomplished earning my MA Ed. by focusing all of my time and energy on one task. I postponed everything else in my life so I could focus on working full-time and going to school.

    1. I really like how you have accomplished one of your big goals already, it is very motivating. Focusing all your time and energy is one of the most important tools to be successful in anything in life. Putting everything aside and focus on that one important thing you are willing to achieve will forsure allow you to reach your goals in the best way possible. It is very difficult and stressing as I heard to work full-time and go to college, but it is great to know that your are doing very well and successful in what your are doing.

    2. A Masters already? Wow! Good for you, I can only imagine the determination and sacrifice that went into achieving that goal, and I particularly admire anyone who is willing to make education their career. I'm curious, did you find it very difficult to manage grad school while working full time? I'm nowhere close to that point myself, but I'll be moving into upper division courses at SDSU shortly, and I'm a bit concerned about how I'm going to maintain full employment as well as a full college workload. It has been possible here because of online classes, but earning BA and MA degrees usually requires more "in person" classwork. Do you have any practical tips on how you managed to juggle work/college? I would be grateful for any advice you could offer.

  2. One of my main goals in life is to accomplish my bachelors degree in civil engineering and have a very successful career after graduation. My time management techniques I was, still and will be using to accomplish this goal of mine is to be always in time and always have my work done early and professionally. I will also work very hard to get the best experience out of myself trying to reach my goal and trying to enjoy the way to reaching my goals as much as possible in order to keep myself motivated. If I ever face obstacles like I had before, I will always turn to my friends and get back to the right track.

    1. I like how you are not afraid to turn to your friend when obstacles come up. Most people do not have good friends that can help out with things like that. Also we often are afraid to bother people about our problems because we feel like we are burdening them. I also like how you try to get your work done early. This is a very smart thing to do because it gives us an advantage. You never know when something unexpected might come up and you will have to shift your attention to another task.

    2. I like how you juggle your time for your goals and your friends. Mainly because that is very hard to keep both in your life and to be successful. I agree that working hard is the best way to reach a goal and get a great experience.I also agree that getting your work done early and professionally is a very smart thing to do mainly because I am usually a procrastinator and usually regret it.You seem to have a good plan for your future and wish you the best of luck.

  3. One of my main goals in life is to be a motivational speaker. My time management technique I will use by speaking to young children, teens, and adults in different schools, colleges, programs, and churches. I want to inspire thousands of people and tell them about my story. Even though I am writing an autobiography I want to be able to speak out and reach to as many people as I can. I know that I may face some bad struggles along the way of my life but I will not give up at all and I will accomplish my goals.

  4. One of my lifetime goals has been to earn a bachelor’s degree (at the very least). I am about halfway there now, as this is my last semester before earning my Associates in Business Admin, and I will hopefully be transferring to SDSU in the fall. The main obstacles I face are a lack of money and time. I am dealing with the money problem by applying for as many scholarships as possible; the applications involve a considerable amount of extra work, but they’re worth it! The time problem is going to be more difficult to overcome. I work full time in addition to taking a full college course load, and although difficult, this schedule has been possible at Cuyamaca due to the availability of online classes. SDSU has far fewer online class options, so I’ll have to take mainly afternoon and night classes in order to complete my BS. When it comes to prioritization, my three top life priorities are my family, my work, and my education. My work takes up 40 hours per week; my studies usually take another 35 hours or more, depending on the level of difficulty. With all of that plus all of the other necessary items that go into life; time with my wife and kids, shopping, doctor's visits, paperwork, scholarship applications, car repair, etc... there really isn't much time left for personal relaxation. I usually end up choosing sleep over entertainment when I can get it. As far as time management tools, I start assignments early, break them into manageable components, and use lists to keep track of important tasks. I have to keep a tight control over my schedule in order to fit in my college homework, and my study/workday generally runs from 5am-11pm broken only by a late afternoon or evening slot that I spend with my kids. My wife is also taking classes, and we have had to give up a lot in order to make college possible. The goal is worth it to us though; our kids’ future is more than worth it.

    2. It looks like you have a lot on your plate, but your doing an amazing job balancing it all out. Working full time in addition to being in school full time is not easy at all, but it looks like you have it all figured out. Not only are you hanging you time wisely, but you are also taking extra measures to find scholarships to help with the financial aspect of school. It looks like you on the right track with everything and good luck with transferring.

For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

One of my lifetime goals are to receive a college education. My main roadblock is my procrastination. I plan to use a daily list of things to do, to stay on track with my time. This way I can manage my life and what I do with my time successfully. Education is my top priority and is key to having the future that I so badly desire. I will revolve all of my priorities around my education goals. My top list of priority is arranged in order as school, work, family, and finally work and leisure time. I plan to use the 80/20 rule to keep me focused on my everyday schedule for success.

    1. hey man that's good you got your priorities straightened out. Now you can build on those steps you took and life with get easier for you as you adjust to schedule more. As for completing your college education I like how you said you're taking one day at time. that worked for me because looking at more than just one day could seem kind of stress. keep at it and you'll succeed.

      Delete
    2. I have the same goal as yours. My main roadblock is procrastination as well. I think using a daily list will work best to overcome this obstacle as well, because you would see what needs to be done right in front of you. I think the hardest thing about procrastination is the starting of doing something, because as soon as you start, you are on your way to finishing and not still procrastinating.

      Delete
    3. Good ideas here. Taking it one day at a time is helpful to reduce stress. I agree that the hardest part is getting started.

  6. One of my lifetime goals is becoming a physical therapist. There are a couple things that worry me, like how am I going to pay for school, and deciding which school is the best for me to transfer to. money is the main one that I worry about because I work part time and I don't live with my parents. I have a lot of other expenditures and I did apply for the fafsa so I should be getting some financial aid this year, but I know that I will eventually have to take a loan or even a few. There's always applying for scholarships but in the long run I know ill be owing money to some bank or school. Since reading chapter six I have started to use different methods to save my money like opening a savings account at me bank and putting at least one hundred dollars in there from each paycheck I get. so far I've managed save a few hundred. As for time management I since I worked things out to where im not commuting so for work I've really been able to manage my time better where I could balance having a job and being a full time student.

  7. One of my lifetime goals is to get my masters in sports medicine. I want to be a sorts physical therapist. I want to help others in a way that I couldn't be helped. It takes a lot of schooling to get where I want to be. I know I can do it. Sometimes life gets in the way and things come up but how I work around that is make sure I start an assignment early enough so that if things do come up then I will still have time to accomplish and complete the assignment without procrastinating on it. Money seems to always be an issue but I recently opened a savings account so I can manage my money better. I am doing really well with managing my time. This class is helping me a lot.

  8. One of my lifetime goals is to become a nurse. I will use the time management technique of “do the first small step”. In order for me to accomplish this goal the first thing I need to work on is completing the prerequisites for a nursing program. Once I have done the first step i believe that things will start to fall in place. As I am completing the prerequisites, I am also working on my general education. While I do work hard on my work I also take breaks so that I do not get overwhelmed and stressed out. I do have to deal with obstacles such as getting distracted easily or procrastinating. In order to overcome these obstacles I get my work done in quiet places such as the library. Even with all the obstacles in my way I do plan to accomplish my lifetime goal of becoming a nurse.

    1. I think becoming a nurse is a fantastic career. I know many people that are in that career and are very happy they have chosen that path as the future is super-bright for nurses! The schoolwork involved can be very challenging at times, but you have great ideas to succeed in fulfilling your lifetime goal. Becoming a nurse requires hard work and effort, but the rewards both monetarily and simply helping others is invaluable.

      Delete
    2. Wow! That's awesome! I've looked into becoming a nurse and unfortunately, it did not work for me. You are absolutely right, everything will fall into place if everyone would start small and work their way up! I, too, get distracted sometimes when life happens or other things need to get done. I believe you have great ideas in alleviating this and I am glad you are doing great.

  9. One of my lifetime goals is to finish school. To accomplish this, I would need to do it step by step, by completing all of my classes for a start. But to do that, I need to allocate time for each piece of assignment and make sure I don't get burned out with school work. I would need a schedule, and give myself two hours of studying and completing assignments for each class that I have, with a ten minute break so I won't get restless in between. For overcoming obstacles, I would need to find incentives that would keep me from procrastinating, like promising myself that I will go on a shopping trip on the weekend or read a good book when I get finished with the day's class assignments.

    1. I truly agree that taking it step by step is going to be your best choice. Sometimes, when we look at something like school, we see it as a distant goal. So many classes, so much homework, and not the right time management get it done. But you are on the right track. You have a very good schedule here that you can follow. One suggestion, don't promise yourself things. It's sort of like setting yourself up to feel bad if you don't get to it. But I do like that you will reward yourself.

      Delete
    2. I too agree that by taking a step by step approach would be the best method when looking at school, because looking at the overall picture can be discouraging. I also believe that by having a schedule will help to keep you organized and motivated to get your work done. I also believe that by reminding yourself why it is that you went to school will help you to stay motivated on your coursework and help you to achieve good grades. I also think that by having a rewards system will help to motivate you to finish the task at hand.

  10. One of my lifetime goals is to succeed and finish college. Even though I am undecided on my major I know I am going in the right direction. In order to accomplish my goals is first, to work hard and not procrastinate. I tend to procrastinate on many things which is a problem I have been trying to overcome. I am trying by finishing my homework before it is due, and by working on big projects little by little and by planning ahead of time. Overcoming some of my obstacles be to think of all the positives that can come out it.

  12. One of my lifetime goal is to run a business. Right now I am working in an office where I am getting as much experience as possible. I am also in school trying to get my business degree. However, it is very hard to manage my time. I usually overbudget time and money so that when unexpected things happen I have a buffer. I also keep a priority list. Every morning, I sit down and list all the things that I need to accomplish, and all the tasks that needs to be finished. However, some days it can be difficult. Sometimes I get distracted or life happens, like when I need to buy groceries, do laundry, run errands and etc. The next thing you know, there is not that much time anymore. That is my biggest challenge. However, I am trying very hard to alleviate that and make sure I have enough time by keeping the priority list I’ve mentioned earlier and making sure that I do the things that are more important and time sensitive first.

  13. One of my lifetime goals is to pass the BAR exam and become a lawyer. I know that this is a long road and that it will take much self discipline to reach this goal. Therefore, using time management is going to be essential in reaching this life goal. Setting time aside to study is going to be very important so I will have to make sure I have a schedule for the week. This will be helpful in organization as well as making sure that I spend time on other things as well. I know that sacrificing time will also be needed so not going to the gym or hanging out with friends is a high possibility. This does not upset me though as in the end I will be more successful because of it.

My other goal, which coincides with my goal of investment banking is to attend a prestigious university. Just yesterday I was admitted to UCSD officially guaranteeing that this will be my 4th and final semester at grossmont/cuyamaca. 18. One of my important lifetime goals is continue my study, and have a college degree. The first step is having motivation, which is my ambition to have a good career. Then I should convert this motivation into task. I’m going to take classes in my major in the next semester that helps me to achieve my major. This will put me on the right way to a good opportunity in the career I like. One of my priorities is to achieve my goal, which is my major and take an associate degree. Since I’m working, and have a family with my responsibilities towards them, I need to balance my time. I’m attending college at morning, and working part time at evening. I only have two or three hours to study before I go to work because I come back from work tired. I have to do my household chores and cook at night because I have college the second day. Although I have many tasks to do all the day, but sometimes it’s hard to deal with time bandits. When I think in my study and my goal, this encourages me to return back and focus on my study.

  19. One of my lifetime goals is to own my own home. In order to be able to accomplish this, I need to save money. I can accomplish this by putting money in my savings account each pay check, balancing my check book and not spending more than I earn. I have children, so this part might get a little tricky at times. I work full time and go to school full time, so time management is very important, more of a juggling act really. This, somehow and coincidentally, flows over to my finances because when I run out of time, I go get fast food for dinner. So, I will begin by not making quick stops on the way home. Another way I can achieve my goal is to not get sidetracked by events, such as parties and birthdays, or going out of town to visit family. I will stay focused as much as I can. I have the credit score. I am now working on the necessary to fulfill those requirements. I will ask for help from the people around me and not feel bad by doing so.

    1. Owning a home in the future is one of my lifetime goals too. Being on top of your spending habits and where you an cut off unnecessary items, like impulse buying can help boost up your savings quickly. I also work full-time and go to school almost full-time and have a a family to support, buying fast-food can be an easy fix. However, eating out adds up quickly and it is unhealthy. What I try to do when I have time is I try to make a healthy meal and make as much as I can to have leftovers for work and for dinner the next day. This has been pretty cost effective and it has made me feel less guilty. Good luck on your future lifetime goal, Irma!

  20. One of my lifetime goals is to buy and own a house in San Diego within five to seven years. To accomplish this goal I will need to obtain a career that pays wells to be able to buy a home and maintain it. Before I can even obtain a job that pays well I will need to finish school and obtain my degree. I will need to manage my time effectively to successfully finish school. One of the techniques I can use to manage my busy schedule is to place a calendar in an area I see often, like the wall next to my bedroom door. In an advance I can write all important dates of exam dates or when assignments are due. Placing the calendar in this area where it is visible will be helpful because I can take a glance it before I go to work and it’ll help me remember what exams and assignments are coming up.

  21. One of my lifetime goals is to become a video game designer. In order to reach this goal I will need to set aside time to study. Then I would need to talk to a counselor to find what classes I need to take to major in game design. Right now working at a small job that I do not like is terrible and I do not see myself working there forever. I look what I do there and I hate it. My mom always tells me that this is chump change compared to what school and an education can do for me. I also look at the others around me and how they act while working around me. I feel as though their smiles are fake and I do not want to work forever with a fake smile. I want to be able to have that career that puts a smile on my face because it allows me to take care of my own. I know that I can do it now since I still live with my mom and only pay her 150$ a month to help. 26. Motivation is the act or process in completing tasks. Another way I look at it is energy. Motivation is the key of completion. If you set goals and dreams in your life, one of the only ways you will complete the objective is to set the mind on conquering a lifetime goal. You must have inspiration, exercise, and reward to cover come the challenge you face. Without motivation in your life, you will end up sitting on the couch, watching TV and having a minimum wage job. College students are going to school for a reason. That reason is success. Everyone must look their self in the mirror and ask, what is my purpose in life. The answer will not come to you immediately, but putting yourself through school and motivating yourself to find that answer will bring you to success.

Right now my number one priority would be finishing school and saving up money to be able to own my own business and not just walk into it blindly. Time management will be very important throughout my life because i tend to juggle a lot of tasks at once, but being able to balance it all out can defiantly make it a lot easier. I would say I'm pretty good at time management now, I defiantly still have a lot to work at, but considering everything I need to do and everything that i am able to accomplish Im defiantly on the right track.
