Chapter 3, Learning Style and Intelligence, February 16-22

Remember to make 2 postings of at least 100 words each this week.  Choose any 2 of the topics below for your postings this week.

1.  What is your ideal environment for learning?  What study strategies work best for you?
2.  What are your highest multiple intelligences and what careers do they suggest?
3.  Write about your experiences in college so far.  Have you been able to apply anything learned in this class?

Apply what you have learned so far in this course (motivation, personality type, learning style, multiple intelligences) by commenting on any of these scenarios:

4. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.
5. You have to study for a challenging math test.
6. You have to write up a lab report for a biology class. It includes drawing of a frog you have just dissected.
7. You are taking a required course for your major and it is taught by only one professor. You dislike this professor.
8. You are taking a business class and have been assigned a group project to design a small business. It is worth 50% of your grade. One of the group members wants to control the group and the others seem to be rebelling.
9. You have signed up for an economics course and find it difficult to stay awake during the lecture.
10. You signed up for a philosophy course to meet a humanities requirement. The vocabulary in the course is unfamiliar.
11. As part of the final exam, you have to prepare a five minute presentation for your art history class.

  1. My ideal environment for learning is that I have to study when it is very sunny or there is a lot of lightning in a room. It also has to be very quiet without any noise around in order for my brain to focus and to accomplish everything I need. I also like to snack while doing my work so I do not get bored and keep myself somehow entertained. I really hate having music while doing homework because it cause me a lot of distractions unlike a lot of people who prefer the exact opposite. My learning strategies are that I keep myself organized and do everything in order. I also like to use planners and highlights because I tend to write a lot as well.

  2. My college experience has been great and I have learned a lot from this class. For example: I learned to improve my learning strategies and be able to have a clear picture of my prefered ideal learning environment. Also, this class helped me learn more about my personality from the DWYA, which gave me a detailed description of myself and learn about my weakness to help improve them, and my strengths to maintain them. Also, from doing the change a habit project, I learned that I am capable of doing and changing anything I am willing to change if I worked hard for it.

  3. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?
My strongest learning preferences are high authority motivation, high motivation, warm environment more structure, early day and learning alone. I work alright by myself but when a person that has authority over me is present I work even harder. I naturally have high motivation but I tend to work even harder when others are present. I hate structure in my life but enjoy it in my college classes. In my learning environment I like it quiet, and if possible to just be me by myself. I am more productive in a warm environment that it absolutely quiet. I like it this way so I can hear myself think. The study strategies that work best for me are using flashcard to study, writing symbols or pictures in the margin to mark important points, taking notes on lectures and outlining chapters.

  4. 3. Write about your experiences in college so far. Have you been able to apply anything learned in this class?

My experience in college so far is pleasant. I do not take many classes but I am highly motivated. The vision of finishing at my own pace while being able to still live my life propels me through the challenges. Therefore all of my college experiences so far have been challenging experiences that have made me more mentally aware. They also have all been learning experiences. I have found many of the things I have learned in this class helpful. The things that have been most helpful though have been the learning strategies and my preferred learning environment. I am looking forward to learning more concepts that I can apply to my life.

  5. My ideal environment for learning for me can be in any place. Im really not picky as long as I"m getting my task done then I'm all set. I don't mind listening to music or having people around I actually like company even if i'm doing my own thing. I dont like to eat though if i'm doing task because I like to enjoy my food and have my work clean. The study strategies that work for me are taking down notes, setting goals that I am able to accomplish, positive affirmations, and being organized with all my task that need to be done.

  6. My ideal environment for learning is a clean space that is well organized and spacious if that can be arranged. I prefer a traditional style desk and a straight-backed chair to work at. I work best early in the morning and prefer lots of bright natural light, I feel like it encourages me to be productive. I also like to have music playing at a moderate volume and I like to move around when I work. I tend to be a multi-tasker so moving around helps me keep track of my projects and since moving around revives the metabolism it helps bolster my energy levels all day long.

  7. I chose the scenario in which I fictionally am taking a course class for my major that is taught by only one professor, whom I dislike. I chose this because a few years ago I had to take a difficult online math class at another college and wound up not getting on well with the online adjunct professor. I’m usually a go with the flow kind of person and I think that the issue stemmed from the fact that the professor was not a math teacher but she was teaching a math class and was not able to help me much when I had a hard time. At first I was pretty frustrated, but ultimately my sense of perseverance and my personality type overcame my frustration. Ultimately I had to focus myself and get tutoring and dedicate more time in order to pass the class.

  8. My ideal learning environment is being inside a cool temperature room, warm temperature makes me drowsy and cold temperature is better because I feel comfortable in it. I like the lights to be bright, dim lighting makes me space off, but in bright light I feel more alert and more engaged in my studying. I don't like to be alone when I study because I get easily bored and start checking my phone or daydreaming. Instead, I like to be with a group of people in a study session. When studying in a group, there is more talking about the material being studied and more talking doesn't make my mind stray like it does when I study alone.

  9. My two highest intelligence scored are Interpersonal (understanding people) and Logical-Mathematical (understanding abstract principles and manipulating numbers, quantities, and operations). The careers they suggest are for Interpersonal, education or health care. The careers suggested for Logical-Mathematical are mathematician, tax accountant, scientist, and computer programmer. I feel like the Interpersonal's choices fit me better than the Logical-Mathematical one. Interpersonal suggested education and I am determined to go into that field. As for the Logical-Mathematical one, I know that I do love math, but I don't plan to be a mathematician any time soon. I feel like being would fit me better as a career choice.

  10. My experience in college so far has been a little bit of a challenge time consuming wise because of my situation. So far I think I just need to get a head start with my assignments so that way I may not be behind. I'M still scrolling through the college page to get familiar with how the website work. I have been able to apply my personality trait that I have learned in class for example, judging my favorite trait , I made a daily schedule of the things that I need to study on and how much time I need to work on my assignments.

  11. I believe I am flexible in that I do not have a specific preference for a a learning environment. What I am trying to say is that sure I rather study in a well lit room with some non distracting background noise but if I that environment is not accessible to me I am in no way inhibited to learn, or so I think. I like to take notes in class, and then review them when it comes time to study for a test so I like traditional classrooms versus online classrooms. That suits me well being that I am a kinesthetic learner, so when I have the chance to write or move my hands to learn something I excel in that sense. Although, according to the tests I am also a strong visual and auditory learner as well.

  12. If I was ever taking a course that was taught by a teacher I disliked I would remember and do a few things. First of all, by reading through the college scope I know that my personality matches up with many of the teachers so I would find similarities and try to train myself not to have a problem with the teacher. Secondly, I would remember that there are always difficulties in achieving something, so I would look at the end result of taking the class and strive toward that instead of dwelling on the fact my teacher and I do not get along. Lastly, I would remember that everyone is different and just because I do not like a teacher does not mean I will not like the material being taught.

  13. Post 1: My ideal environment for learning is in a quiet, well lit area. I have to work in a quiet environment to help me stay focused otherwise I’ll get distracted. I also have to work or study alone because I tend to get distracted and talk about other things when I work in a group. If I do my homework in a room with dim lighting I will most likely want to drift off to sleep. Working in a well lit area helps me stay awake and focused on my work. Some study strategies that work best for me are studying flash cards repeatedly and saying the information out loud. By repeating the information over and over again out loud, I can memorize the information really well. These strategies seem to work really well for me.

  14. Post 2: So far, my experience in college has been good. My first semester was last fall and I took three classes. I enjoyed all of them and my teachers were great. I really like how I am able to manage my own schedule and take classes when I want to. This semester I am taking four classes. It is a little bit more challenging and full of work but I am managing. This class has especially helped me get through these first few weeks of school. I was able to change my study habits with the habit assignment that was assigned to us in this class. I am now able to sit down every day and get at least some sort of homework done. I do look forward to seeing what this class will help me with next and what the future holds for me as well.

  15. My ideal learning environment is a quiet, cool room with no distractions, people or noise. I enjoy working on my computer in dark dark rooms with all the lights off so I can concentrate better. On the other hand, when working with visual aid drawings and writing on paper then I want the room almost as bright as it can be so I can focus and see more clearly what I am doing. As an added benefit, sometimes the light wakes me up too when I am tired. The study strategies that work best for me are using different colored highlighters to emphasize important key points in books, as well as taking very clear notes during lectures.

  16. My highest multiple intelligences are Logical Mathematical and Musical. I intend to use my mathematical strength to pursue career work related to science and/or the computer field that utilizes various problem solving abilities. I also have a high multiple intelligence in music and this is from many years of playing instruments and studying music. The careers suggested are of course those related to music, but I intend to use my musical strength by trying to relax, re-energize and refocus outside of my studying as music has always been nothing more than a hobby to me.

  17. My ideal environment for learning is affected by my personality type, and my personality type is INFP. Since I’m an introvert, I like quiet for concentration, but with having two kids it’s kind of difficult, so I tried to wake up early in the morning, and study alone without distracting especially in the weekend, and I already like to study in this period of time because this my best time to focus in my study. Being an intuitive is a good at learning concept and theories. I like to concentrate on the main points, but also tried to write details on my own words after understand them in order to make them easier for me. I am a feeling type, therefore I am looking for classes that are relating to my personal interest. I like to be helpful and studying in groups which have some perceiving types and some judging types because I am perceiving type, and showing preference to judger, so I have fun, and be organized at the same time. I show more preference to Intrapersonal, and I really understanding myself, my goals, responds, and behavior. Since this is one of the two aspects of emotional intelligence, I hope I could have a good career because I have the ability to express myself, and work a part of a team.

  18. When we have to take a required class for our major, we should aware that every professor has different personality type. Since everyone has a different personality, we should show respect to every type of their personality. It’s so important to me to feel comfortable with my instructor, and like the way he/she teaches us, so I always try to adjust myself with the instructor’s personality, and be understanding and respectful because after all he /she is doing their jobs, and I try to find what is interesting in his/her way in teaching, and what they like or dislike in their class and do it as much as I can.

  19. My ideal learning environment i will have to say that it is during the earliest part of my day. I prefer this because, in my opinion as soon as you wake up your mind is still fresh and clear of any distractions since you have nothing on your mind. Once I have reviewd everything early, I can go about my day and review what I have learned. I find work best for me the use of note card. In my opinion note cards are very versatile and create a sort of game which makes studying a bit more fun and appealing.

  20. I am required to take a course for my major and there is only one professor teaching and i find myself disliking this particular instructor. If a scenario like that ever plays out i must understand what my priorities are and put aside all negativity. I must know that this is an important class in order to move forward and all though it is easier said than done I must learn to adapt and stay motivated. I shall step back and asses the situation, maybe it is I who is creating the unnecessary difficulties. I will try to understand his personality and if any questions arise I will ask for help.

  21. My ideal environment for studying definitely has to be warm. I hate feeling cold while studying, it feels like a form of torture. I also very much prefer a well lit area, especially when I anticipate that I'll be reading for long periods of time. Low light bothers my eyes and gives me headaches just trying to make out the words on a page. I need silence when I'm studying, I can never think when loud music is playing or people are carrying out conversations near me.

  22. You are taking a required course for your major and it is taught by only one professor. You dislike this professor...

I this situation, as a visual learner I would take it upon myself to learn course material on my own. If I feel that a specific teacher's teaching style does not suit that of my own I simply make more of an effort to teach myself the material at home rather than allowing myself to struggle from professors teaching style. Although, to a certain degree I must do my best to adapt to the style of my professor. No matter how different the style is than mine, adapting is undoubtedly the most successful manner in achieving a good grade in any course of study.

  23. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

My ideal learning environment is quiet, cool, well lit, and connected to the internet. I don't need to move around the room in order to think, (although I do bounce around in my chair a fair bit). I am definitely a morning person, and try to schedule my more complex tasks for that time slot, saving the evenings for work that requires less creativity. I prefer to study on my own as I find that I learn faster that way, but I do enjoy collaborating with others in the workplace.

As far as learning style; I have been a speed reader from a young age, and this has been very helpful to me in college as I can get through large amounts of text quickly. I take online classes whenever I can, and I love using the internet for research, it is amazing how much information is at your fingertips! I am a self-starter and dislike having someone give me a detailed list of instructions for a task (and then micromanage me as I perform it), I much prefer to be given the task and be expected to work out the details on my own. As far as productivity and focus; I am certainly able to complete only one task at a time – but I do find that a little boring, and enjoy being able to multitask for some variety.

  24. You have to study for a challenging math test…

As a child I had severe difficulties with math; I seemed utterly incapable of memorizing my times tables, absolutely HATED oral quizzes, and pretty much built up an intense fear of the entire subject based on my continual failures. There is a happy ending to the story though, as my first mathematics professor here at Cuyamaca was fantastic, a terrific teacher. He helped me break though my mental blocks in that area and I have aced every math class since then.

The most important math study skill he taught me was to NEVER skip over a concept I didn't understand, but instead to just try to keep looking at it from new angles. Skipping over something in math leaves a gaping hole in your tool kit, and you had better believe you’re going to regret skipping it later. If I was struggling with a basic speed/time conversion, (and I most definitely was) he would have me change up the components of the question to something that was familiar to me in real life, something that gave a sense of reality to the concept he was trying to teach. The other skill he taught me in preparing for a major math test was to avoid getting bogged down too heavily in the minutia of the questions that I thought might be on the test, but rather to just spend time reviewing and making sure that I understood the overall concepts that were going to be covered. As long as I understood why a concept worked, the exact problems on the test seemed to make much more sense. As a test taking strategy, he also taught me not to try to scan the whole test first, (that method would just freak me out) but rather to just read each question carefully one at a time, and calmly deal with each one as it was presented.

    1. Good ideas for studying math. I still think it is a good idea to skim the test so you can manage your time well. Start with the easiest question first to calm your anxiety.

  25. My ideal learning environment is a desk, however, I do not like sitting in an uncomfortable chair. I get fidgety and I cannot focus. I don’t typically mind background noise and can usually block it out. I like to snack on fruits or something light when I am studying. It somehow enables me to focus and work efficiently. I like to be comfortable when I am studying or working so I don’t like to be too hot. I do not like working where there is a lot of light. My eyes get strained and it hurts and then I lose my focus.

  26. You are taking a required course for your major and it is taught by only one professor. You dislike this professor…

This has actually happened to me! I work in the morning until afternoons and I usually take night classes. I had this professor that was not very organized and tend to lose track in our lessons. The professor also didn’t speak loud and would typically jump from one topic to another topic without fully explaining the first topic. I didn’t really have a choice but adapt and figure out a way to be successful in class. So, what I did was take as much notes as I can. I outlined my notes and separated the main words, highlight them and on the other side of the paper, write down the definition and a couple of examples. That way, in tests, I can go back to my notes and easily remember. I also read along when the professor reads the information off the slides and usually jot down important words or phrases. I also write down words that I don’t understand so that way I can look up these words later on and have a better understanding of the lecture. I usually like it when teachers are more involved with the learning – when they open up discussion, asks what the students think or if they understood the text and whatnot. So even though it was a little difficult to learn in this situation I learned to adapt so that I can finish the class as it is required.

  27. My ideal learning environment is a place with dim lighting, a comfy spot to sit and have a lot of work space.I usually move a lot, eat, and listen to music while studying and doing an assignment. Which is what I am actually doing at the moment. Ii don't movement or talking around my work space I can still keep focus. Some of my study strategies that work best for me involve highlighters, and note cards.

  28. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?

My ideal learning environment is on a hard desk and chair. I have often attempted to do school work on my laptop on my bed or couch, but I feel like I cannot concentrate as well as I do on a regular desk and chair. I think this is because a bed and a couch to me are not places where I am productive because my bed is where I sleep and my couch is a place where I can sit, relax, and watch TV. I also excel in the early mornings with school work and at my job because this is where I am most rested.

  29. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.

When I have to write an essay or any sort of paper that is more than one page, it usually is intimidating to me. Writing has never been my strongest subject and I always leave this sorts of assignments until the very end, which makes me even more stressed than I would want to be. However, what I have learned so far in this class to help me produce a good quality assignment and on time, has been to work early in the mornings shortly after I have woken up and on a regular desk and chair. Another skill I have learned is to work on these intimidating assignments little by little each day so it does not become overwhelming.

  30. If I signed up for am Economics course and found it difficult to stay awake during the lecture, I would apply what I have learned so far in this class to help me solve the problem. First I would obviously try to get more hours of sleep the night before, by finishing my homework earlier and getting to bed earlier, without my phone. Also, I would eat a well-balanced breakfast the morning of the lecture so that my body and mind are more alert. Lastly, I would drink some coffee to help me stay awake and pay attention to the professor.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My ideal learning environment would be quiet and secluded and would allow me to have more of a “hands on” approach. I found that being able to take apart and reassemble something helps me to get a better understanding of how it works and I also find it easier to remember what it is and how it works. I also find that listening to music from video games helps me to remember what I study because it helps me to concentrate better. My highest intelligence's include linguistics and music. These two strengths allow me to communicate clearly with others and to remember things easier when I listen to music.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. What is your ideal environment for learning? What study strategies work best for you?
The best environment for me to study in is either a quiet, bright one or a dim setting with music playing low. For me, I prefer to be in a bright and quiet work environment because it is easier for me to focus and stay focused on my ideas and thoughts. When I am doing just basic home/school work, I like to put on some country music low and open a window, let some light in, and just do the work. I am not exactly sure why this helps me focus more on my classwork but it just does.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 4. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.
I chose this subject because not long ago, about last semester, I took a class that required LOTS of papers. I am not too good at putting together papers in an prderly way. I kind of scatter my points around instead of actually taking the time to organize my points and thoughts. So I think the only strategy to solve this dilemma is to apply my organization skills more when it comes to papers. If I sit down and actually take my time to write the paper and organize the points I am trying to make, the paper would turn out better.

  34. When I have to study for a difficult math test I tend to study the night before because studying later in the day helps me to remember things more clearly. I also listen to music because I can remember equations easier if I can associate a rhythm or song with it. I would also study alone to help me concentrate better and not have any distractions. I would also prefer to study on furniture that I can recline on and be comfortable on so that I can concentrate more. I would also take a break every 20-30 minutes to allow the information to sink in and so that I can be more relaxed and focused when I go back to studying.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I prefer bright lights and a cool environment for studying. I also prefer to study alone in a secluded and interruption free environment as I am an introvert. For studying, doodling is great for me so applying color through highlighting is a good idea. I also benefit from repeating what I learn out loud as well as teaching it to others. I feel that by reading information to others or trying to help them learn it better in beds the information in my own mind. To be most productive a cool, quiet and secluded environment is beneficial for me while studying.

  36. 9. I have just signed up for an economics class that bores me half to death but I need to stay awake for it. What do I do? My first step is to bring snacks and water to class. Nothing keeps me awake more than food does, as weird as it sounds. Something healthy is usually a better option for snacking. I would take notes on what the lecture was about to keep me busy and my brain moving. If it was possible, I would try to make myself as interested in the subject as possible to keep my thoughts on track.

  37. In the case that I have to take a course and the only instructor available has a different personality or learning type than me, I would try to understand the instructions personality. I would examine their learning styles and go over the course material and see how best to make it fit my personal style. In this case I may need to adapt which typically isn't a problem for my personality. There is several different study techniques that I found apply and work for me, I would use those to best fit the professors learning style. I can also adjust my study habits to cater to the professors teaching style.

  38. My ideal study/learning space is pretty typical for an introvert. I prefer being by myself so that I can focus. I don't often find myself studying in libraries since i have a desk at home, but they're a good study environment when I do. A lot of times there will be distraction in my house from my family, like the tv on in the other room or some sort of conversation going on. I sometimes have quiet instrumental music playing while I work, but when its something really important I tend to prefer silence. Having a bottle of water near me is pretty important; it keeps me focused and hydrated.

My ideal learning environment is at a table or desk. I like to have my computer or laptop on a flat surface. I find that when I have tried to do my work sitting at my bed, it is not only uncomfortable, but it's annoying and distracting. If I am sitting at the table with my laptop open, everyone knows I am doing homework or working on an assignment. Likewise, at work, I have my own desk, so I am accustomed to being in my own space. I like to have lighting when I work. Dim lights make me feel lazy. I don't like listening to music or getting up to much on food or snacks while I work. It distracts me. I'd rather wait to eat until I finish.

If I had just been assigned a ten page term paper, I would first ask for specific instructions on what the topic is and what part of the topic I am expected to cover. I would then research this topic and print out the information in order to be able to read, highlight, make site notes on the pages and write a draft. I would most likely space out the time I will need to complete this project so that I am not trying to do it last minute. Once my outlined draft is complete I could rearrange my thoughts, by looking back on the material that was researched. Depending on the time I am given to write this ten page term paper, I would split the time I need to take to complete it with the days I have to do so.

  40. My ideal environment for learning for me can be in any place that has a desk. I can't realy do work laying down because I will just fall asleep. I need to be listening to music. It actually helps me concentrate. I could have people around, it doesn't distract me. I like to eat when I do my work. The best study strategies that work for me are taking down notes and going over them everyday. Ask a lot of questions, highlight my notes. and being organized.

  41. So far, my experience in college has been intresting. This is my second semester. My first semester was alright I took 13 units. This semester I'm taking 16! managing my time was easier then I thought it would be. I love to take classes when I want to. This semester Is a lot easier and my teachers are way more nice. The assignment we just did "How To Change A Habit" helped me because I eat breakfast everyday and I am able to focus in class better because of it. I am enjoying this class so far.

  42. My ideal environment for studying would be early morning. I like to study in the morning because the way I see it, its crunch time right before the exam and theirs no more time to get off topic. Studying early in morning helps me keep focus and keeps my mind clear from all the distractions that happen to me later in the day. I also like studying in a warn environment. Normally I go to a Starbucks and snack on something while studying just to concatenate a little bit more.

  43. If I have to study for a challenging math test, normally what I would do is ask the teacher to go over certain problems. I would make up early and go over the homework or practice test. I ll attempt a problem multiple times until I can solve it without needing help or looking at notes.

  44. My ideal environment for learning would have to be a very quiet place. I hate hearing noises or seeing distractions of other things because it causes me not to be fully focus on the material I would prefer my room where it is just me and the work that I am doing or I would prefer the school library where they have those study rooms and Ill just go in there and do my work. For strategies I like to use notecards and repeat looking at them constantly to I remember the material. Or ill just highlight important words and facts and read them over again.

  45. My experience in college so far has been great. I enjoy the college life. There is a lot of freedom in college and it is unlike high school. I noticed in college there is a lot of free time and your are giving to do the work that needs to be done. In college you are allowed to pick your classes and the time frame of when you want to take the classes and can also pick the days. It is not scheduled and works around the schedule of an individual.

  46. My ideal environment for learning is a quiet working place. I easily get distracted. I do have minor learning disabilities that make it hard for me to focus on one individual subject/thing at a time, sometimes certain instructions or question must be repeated to me more than once, and school does get hard for me. I just work ten times harder than my classmates to remember and do well in school. Seeking help and visual learning is what works best for me. Especially when I have a case manager or a counselor I can come to whenever I am in need of support or extra help.
So far, my college experience has been great. It can be challenging, but since I decided to take my classes at Cuyamaca, school has been a lot easier for me. The professors and student body are quite welcoming and it is easy to understand the material. College is at your own pace, somewhat. You get to pick however many classes you want to take each semester and get to decide which classes you want to take.

  47. My ideal environment for learning is siting in the front row of the class so I can pay attention and so there isn't any distractions like other students in front of me. Also I like a quiet class when he teacher is speaking, I hate is when people are deciding to talk about whatever it is they did that day or whatever they might be chatting about during class. Class time is to learn, its not social hour. I manly get upset this because i as well as a lot of students have to pay there own way through school and don't want to have our money be wasted on a class that I didn't learn anything in because some people can't wait till after class to talk about there personal lives. Also these people have the worst grades in the class most of the time.

  48. College has been an great experience for me so far because I can see the world Ina different way and also I've got to meat some interesting people and heard some crazy stories. I mainly look for to college now because I can feel my self becoming more educated' I feel smarter and more relaxed. I even feel more mature in the way I handle work associates and just people in general. I love the way that college has opened my eyes and I'm excited to continue my education. Not just continuing through school to get my degree but also to contendere learning everyday of my life. There is always something new to learn.
