Orientation January 26-February 1

Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success! Take a look at my video introduction above.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week, but must have your assignments completed by the end of the week on Sunday. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait until the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Please make 2 postings this week.  Each posting should be a minimum of 100 words.

1.  For the first posting, introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life, and maybe share a photo or video of yourself.  See my introduction below.

2.  As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey.  Where did you attend school before?  Why you are taking this class and what are your goals and dreams for the future?  What are your current educational goals?  See my educational journey below.

You can also comment on other students'  postings.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction

Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses.  I am also the author of your textbook.  In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active.

Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.

I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 34 years.

  1. Serena Westbrook Post 1

    Hi all,

My name is Serena Westbrook. I have varied interests and hobbies. I really enjoy reading; specifically I enjoy reading science fiction and classic novels. My favorite novelist by far is Kurt Vonnegut; as much for his rapier wit and take on society, as his belief in humanism that mirrors my own personal core values. His writing was often satirical and played upon social stereotype but in interviews and in his personal life he encouraged the concepts of humanism and being decent to our fellow man which I try to emulate in my day to day life. I also enjoy swimming, gardening, spending time with my family, learning and self-improvement. I am looking forward to having an enlightening semester with all of you.

  2. Serena Westbrook Post 2:

I started college many years ago at Cuyamaca College as an English major straight out of high school. Shortly after starting school I moved out of state and for several years life “happened” and school had to go on the back burner. I was able to start attending school again back in early 2005 at San Diego City College in Downtown Thanks to a very generous employer who was willing and able to work my work schedule around a school schedule. Since 2005 I have been working full time and going to school part time, a few classes a semester, to obtain an Associates Degree. Of course, aside from the general education requirements, my focus degree wise has changed and fluctuated over the years. I started out declaring an English major and a focus on Paralegal courses as I work in the legal filed. It was over the course of years that I recognized that the classes I did best in and seemed to enjoy the most were in Psychology and Sociology and eventually I decided that I wanted to change my major studies to Sociology, focusing one educational counseling which I did when I found myself coming full-circle back to Cuyamaca College to complete my degree all these years later. I’ll complete my Associates in Science upon completion of this current semester and have a handful of transfer classes left and I hope to transfer into SDSU’s Sociology program. Time permitting I would also really like to complete my legal classes to become a certified paralegal.

  3. Hi! My name is Teri and I'm a Kindergarten Teacher at Barona Indian Charter School. I started my career in 1998 as a TA at Francis W. Parker, then taught 2nd grade and was a Literacy Specialist for 10 years. I decided to teach Kindergarten this year so I could prevent the need for Literacy Intervention in the upper grades. I have a MA Ed. and a million dollars in student loan debt. I am taking this course to avoid student loans payments, but noticed that the Professor has a background in Native American Studies. Please provide any resources that will assist me in my classroom since I teach on an Indian Reservation. My next career goal is to open a home-based tutoring center. I look forward to taking community college courses that will assist me in this endeavor.

  4. Please inform me of any courses that will provide a solid background for opening my own tutoring center. I currently work part time at Sylvan Learning Center and love how they have used iPads to organize curriculum and student portfolios. I want to focus on Reading Intervention, since that is my specialty. Last semester, I took Child Development courses to complete my preschool teaching certification, but decided to pursue tutoring instead of attempt ion to open a home-based preschool when I retire from classroom teaching. 5. Hello, I'm Adra Alkuree and my interests and hobbies are going to the gym, taking as many classes per semester as possible to be able to get out of cuyamca/grossmont and transfer to SDSU. I also enjoy going to the beach a lot, it takes all the stress away. I am 18 years old and I graduated from Valhalla high school. The most important thing in my life would be my family of course. I lost my mother 3 years ago and it still feels like it was just yesterday, but since then, my dad and my siblings and I became very close and I'm really thankful for that.

  7. My educational plan is to try to get out of cuyamaca college in 2 years then transfer to SDSU for another 2 years to be able to get my bachelor degree in civil engineering. I graduated from Valhalla high school and started in cuyamaca college right away. I took this class to complete the GE requirement and my goals are to graduate and have a successful career in the future. My current goals are to maintain a high GPA, which can very very tough and stressing a lot of times, and also take 5 classes each semester to be able to get out of here as soon as possible.

  8. Hi my name is Isaac and I love fiction. That could be books, movies, or even video games. As a kid I played a lot of video games and had a lot of toys. As I grew older I wanted to learn how they made movies and games because it appealed to me. I find it funny that my mom and sister and I are so different. All of us have such an opposite taste in things. One thing we can all agree on is that we love our two year old Pomeranian, Lexi. She loves to go everywhere with me and I love her company.

  9. My first high school was High Tech High in Point Loma. I really loved everything that school taught me there even if it was only for a short amount of time. Sadly I failed all my classes and was a year and a half behind everyone. So I had to look for another way to catch up and graduate on time. So after searching I found Chaparral High School in El Cajon. I loved it there despite what a lot of people here about the school. I had absolutely great teacher and an awesome counselor that helped me become who I am today. I was able to catch up and graduate on time with the class of 2014. I plan to study computers and the ways they work and go on to major in computer science. I also want to meet the requirements to transfer to state. I look forward to everything I am going to learn at Cuyamaca and what is to come after schooling.

  11. As far as my educational journey goes, this is my second semester at Cuyamaca. I failed one class and was probably the worst feeling ever. I graduated from Valhalla High School. Which was a great and unforgettable experience. My goals for this class is to try learn more about myself and figure out my future goals since I am still undecided about my major. My current education goals is to pass all of my classes and figure out what I am best at. I have a family that motivates me to do my best at all times, but procrastination always gets the best of me. I am looking forward to this class and can't wait to see what it has in store for me.

  12. Hi everyone, my name is Michael Asmar-close friend's call me Mikey, or Asmar because we have two Michael's in the group-and this is my second time writing this. I think the website crashed or something. Anyways, I've lived in San Diego all my life and all the while have been surrounded by friends as well as family whom I care for most about in this world. I have many interests including but not limited to exercising, reading, watching movies, listening to music( currently listening to "The Beatles"), surfing, "chilling" with friends( and family), religion, and much more. Some of the things I listed were most likely hobbies but you get the point. As well as going to school, I work as a commercial real estate agent with Keller Williams Commercial Division. Overall, in between the hassle of work and school, I believe I enjoy the simple treasures that life has to offer.

As a young lad I went to many schools as my parents tried to find the best education for me, alas I landed in public school going from Vista Grande Elementary in the fourth grade to Hillsdale Middle, then making my way to Valhalla. Finally, I began Cuyamaca with the goals of transferring to SDSU for Business Accounting. I have changed my plan since and intend on transferring to UCSD for Political Science. I am already working as a Realtor although I would like to go into law in the future. As I am already aware of my educational goals and plan I am taking this class as both a requirement and as reassurance that my goals will be met. I hope that this class will help me achieve what I am here to achieve.

Although I enjoy going to the beach and riding bikes and hiking with friends, I rarely have time to do that with my work/school schedule. I also have a family business in which we sell prom, pageant, bridesmaids dresses, etc. When I'm not at my main job or school, I help out at the boutique with fashion shows and prom expos that we participate in, so I rarely have any free time. I also enjoy listening to new music and watching tv and going to the movies when I can.

My educational journey consist of finishing school with a bachelors degree in business, and possibly getting a certification in real estate. I should be able to transfer from community college in 2016. I was planning on transferring this year but my schedule became messed up due to a prerequisite class that held me back this semester. Hello, my name is Isabela Rodriguez and I was born and raised in San Diego by my single mother. I am the youngest of four. I spend most of my time working full-time for a property management company in La Jolla, raising and spending time with my almost two year old daughter, Arya, and enjoying the sights and sounds of San Diego with my family. As soon as my daughter was born, it became my job to care for and give her the most normal life possible. Her well-being is the most important thing in my life. Although parenting can be overwhelming at times, especially to a very active child, the love and happiness my daughter gives me outweighs any overwhelming moments. Before bedtime, I like to catch up on watching Rehab Addict and Love it or List It. Both are home renovation shows that air on HGTV. I also delight in baking different kinds of desserts for my family to indulge in.

My educational journey didn't have such a great start after I gradated from Bonita Vista High School in 2010. Unfortunately, my admission to SDSU was revoked after I received an unsatisfactory grade on an art class I took during my last semester. Despite not attending SDSU after I graduated, I am content that my life ended up going a different route. I am currently working on transferring to SDSU fall of 2017 and majoring in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Information Systems. If feasible, my goal is to finish my bachelors in two years. During the interim of my educational journey I plan on finding a job within the federal government, particularly in a cyber security position. My counselor had recommended me this class after I had informed him that I was on the wait-list for a psychology class. After looking through the course syllabus, I am thrilled to be taking this class.

  23. Introduction Post

Hello everyone my name is Samuel Equihua, I am 25 years old and still trying to get a college degree. I was born in Los Angeles, California to two amazing and hard working parents, both of which have been very supportive in my life. During high school my dreams and goals had all been set for a military life, as they say I had set all my eggs in that one basket. On my senior year in high school I would receive a football injury to my knee that would redirect and shatter all of my previous goals. The injury not only set my life on the sideline due to the physical part but emotional wise as well. For a while I was trying to decide what was next, what can I possibly due to pursue a new life and one that I would enjoy. Funny on how life works, at the age of 19 still fresh out of high school and a year after my injury I was granted the opportunity to join a field of work that would shape me to the person I am today. A job full of excitement and opportunities that would allow me to value and cherish life but would also put my college education on hold. Well here I am know, after six year and counting of government service, trying to go back to school and pick up where I left off.

  24. Samuel Equihua Educational Journey.

My past education was simple and structured; there was elementary, middle, and high school all for which where planned out for you by a board of education. Now for college, well that’s a true journey. I have found myself bouncing back and forth attempting multiple times to complete, something with much importance, in a full time work lifestyle at which schedule changes at a blink of an eye. Super quick wouldn’t you say? There are many areas of interest that I would like to study, something that I can do after or during my career. Today I have found a new itch for Computer Science, but tomorrow, well tomorrow might be different. For now I would like to enroll and complete all my general education and be able to transfer to a four-year institution.

I work at Cuyamaca as well in the Stem Center also known as the math building. Some of you may also know my dad, Dan Curtis. He is a math teacher here at Cuyamaca as well. [Post 2] As far as my educational journey, I want to major in Kinesiology also known as sports physical therapy I want to get out of Plymouth into years then transfer to university which is yet undecided. I could use some guidance in the area; I'm rather indecisive..I have one sister and I still live with my parents, which I actually really appreciate. I work at Chick-fil-A in Santee, and you all should come in sometime and say hi :) I love to be outside, and lately I've been hiking all over East County. I'm hoping to be able to go backpacking for the first time this July in the Sierras! I also enjoy reading, painting, running, and cooking.

Those two things are probably my greatest academic acheivements, and I'm really proud of them because I never thought they would happen! I am hoping to be out of community college after the fall of 2015, but we'll see what happens. As far as right now, I don't have a plan for after that. Again, I'm hoping this class will provide some guidance for my future. I'm open to pretty much anything right now :) Lately I've been leaning towards either education or nutrition. Immediately after high school I began attending Cuyamaca and Grossmont college to further my educational development and eliminate General Education requirements for university. This is a very exciting year for me because it is my last semester at Cuyamaca and Grossmont. This is the year where I find out where I've been accepted and determine where I will attend University in the fall. My goal is to attend the University of Southern California and ultimately become a financial advisor within 5 years of receiving my degree. From this class I am hoping to learn better time management and sleeping habits as I feel these are my two most lacking attributes.

  30. I am a Business Administration Major, married with two young children, and probably a good deal older than most of you at the ripe old age of thirty-five. As a bit of personal background, I grew up in the Far East, and spent several years in Eastern and Western Europe. I also spent nine amazing years helping to establish and manage a non-profit association in South Africa. I now work as a full-charge bookkeeper and IT manager for a non-profit foundation here in San Diego.

As far as interests and hobbies: I enjoy a wide range of activities, but over the past few years, I have had very little time to actually do any of them – a problem that I imagine most working/college students/parents can identify with. I enjoy reading, working with old wood, snowboarding, traveling, listening to music, running, skydiving, and probably most of all, being able to spend time with my wife and kids.

  31. My educational history is somewhat mixed. I was home schooled up to around the 7th grade and was self-taught beyond that point, with my continuing education consisting mostly of experience and skills gained through employment. I am incredibly thankful that I was finally able to have the opportunity to attend college, and this will be my last semester at Cuyamaca College before transferring to SDSU! I have a fairly broad range of skills and interests, but I am still somewhat uncertain as to whether or not I am actually choosing the best career path for myself or if I am merely settling for something secure that will pay the bills. I am going for a degree in overall Business Administration, but could also easily be successful in Accounting and/or IT. As a father with a young family, I feel that I no longer have the luxury of simply "following my dreams," but I am looking forward to finding closure on this question as we go through this class together.

  35. My educational journey has definitely been a journey! I started in the Philippines - and as far as schooling goes, transferring isn't always easy as we have different school timeframes and we do not have 7th and 8th grade there. When I moved here I was already a sophomore in High School in the Philippines; however, school started here late and agewise, I was placed in 8th grade. Adapting and not knowing anybody was definitely not something I was used to. Fast forwarding to College, I went to San Diego City College for a couple of semesters in hopes that I figure out what I want to take as a major and learn more about careers. I then transferred and took a Pharmacy Technician program so that I can work; however, finding jobs in that field was difficult as there are many experienced technicians in the employment pool. Meanwhile, I was in Sales and I loved it! Giving customers the service they deserve and helping them with what they need is something that I love doing. I was in sales for a little over two years. Last summer, I decided to go back to school as I want to have my own business and want to get my business degree. I wanted to start here in Cuyamaca College and hopefully, transfer to San Diego State University.

I have three children, two boys and one girl. All three are currently enrolled in school. I love to take them to the parks and the zoo on holidays with my husband.

  40. I attended my schooling when I was young in Iraq, from first grade to high school. When I came to America, I wanted to learn English. I thought through school I could pick up the language quicker. I enrolled in Cuyamaca in 2009, studying in General Education. In 2012, I switched my major to Arabic. I finished my Associates Degree in Arabic and Communication. I'm taking this class, along with English 122 and Math 160 in order to be eligible for transfer to SDSU. My education goal for the future is to graduate from San Diego State and teach Arabic.

As far as my long-term goals, I hope to achieve my EMT certification and one day become a firefighter. I am taking this class because it’s required in order for me to transfer to SDSU. From this class I hope to improve my time management, as well better studying habits for these are where I lack skill in.

  42. Hello everyone, my name is Jeffrey Brown, currently residing in San Diego and I am taking this class to expand my education. Some of my hobbies include enjoying the outdoors and exploring the beautiful weather of San Diego going to places such as beach, mountains and local parks. I also enjoy working with computers and learning about computers. Several things that are important in my life are family, work and education. I always enjoy learning new things and work is an essential necessity for basic survival of course, whereas family tends to keep things all in balance. I hope to have fun and open my mind to different insights during my journey with this class.

My educational journey has been somewhat sporadic, attending numerous colleges throughout my life. Most recently I have taken some on-line classes at Mira Costa College in Oceanside to expand my computer skills and knowledge. I tend to enjoy on-line classes, although they do for sure get burdensome with the amount of work that is required compared to most classes I have attended in-school. My experience has been that on-line classes have been much harder, but sitting in a physical classroom could not be possible with my current daily schedule, therefore the on-line classes of course permit for greatest flexibility. I am taking this class to broaden my educational perspective. My educational goals and dreams at this point are to simply gain more insight about myself and the world around me.

  43. My name is Irma Contreras and I am a San Diego native. I am a mother of three boys and three girls. My interests include, among several other things, spending time with my family, going out to dinner, watching movies, or just enjoying a good board game. I also enjoy taking "mini vacations" at least twice a year. My hobbies include reading, when I have the time and browsing the internet. I enjoy learning new things and being a positive role model for my children. Something interesting about my life is that I am currently working on my FHA approval to buy my first home.

I currently work for a non-profit organization, providing a service to families in foster care to aid in their reunification process. I have two titles at my job as Senior Parent Partner and Administrative Assistant. Before this job I was working as a Pharmacy Technician for approximately six months. In the past I have had the opportunity to work at the San Diego International Airport, volunteer at the South Bay Courthouse and study at Southwestern college, although those classes were back in 1992. I am looking forward to taking this course in order to help me be able to pin point my career choice and provide me with an in depth insight of what I need to do to get ahead in my career choice.

  44. Hello Everyone!

My name is Christina and I am 24 years old. I am a San Diego native and a diehard Chargers fan. Currently I am working as a preschool teacher and I love it. Watching children grow and learn is a passion of mine. While I do not have children of my own I do take delight in playing with them and being able to give them back at the end of the day haha. I have a large and growing family. I am currently looking forward to with excitement to becoming an aunt in March, to a baby boy! My eldest sister will be having her first child and I couldn’t be happier. I have one older sister, a younger brother and countless cousins that are just as close as siblings. I am looking forward to this semester and hope to get to know everyone.

I Graduated from Grossmont middle college high school in 2008 and have been attending Grossmont College for my current major for two years. I am enrolled in this class to finish my requirements for my associates which I will graduate with this semester. My major is social and behavioral science and I will be graduating this semester with my associates this spring. I am planning on continuing my education in child development afterwards because I eventually want to open my own preschool. I owned and operated a licensed home childcare for three years before returning to school.

I plan to take all of my classes online because it is just a convenience to me. I love to play basketball and value my family time. I also love to go sightseeing, and I am naturally attracted to beautiful things. I am planning and taking the steps to become a real estate agent. First, I plan to get all my General Ed here so when I focus on my major I can put my all into it.

My immediate future goals after completing high school is to take all of my General Ed classes. Ultimately my goal is to complete college in four to five years and become a real estate agent. I want to give this course and the rest of my education all that I have because I know that you get out what you put into it. Of course we all want to make money but I chose my career not for this reason. I want to be happy and this is my main value that overrides anything else.

  57. Based on finishing chapter two I found out that I am a introverted thinker. I really agree with this. I usually keep to myself unless I find a person that has similar interest as I do. All that time I just kind of think to myself about things that come to mind. When I do find that person I can share similar interest with I can go on and on about what ever it is that we both find so interesting. I find it interesting when a teacher pairs me up with someone that doesn't view some things the way I do. It is a great time to ask why and when did they start thinking that way. It is at that time that we can have such a great conversation. Of course we would stay inside the respect zone because you don't want to get angry at them, you want to hear what they have to say, and of course think about it.

  59. My ideal environment to work in is one of two. Either to work by myself in a room that is quiet with no one in it or with a small group away from everyone else. I feel that when I am with a group that is away from other groups that we will not get distracted as easily because we are not getting any influence from any other group in our area. If that isn't possible then I like to work by myself in a quiet room because I will not get distracted by others I see or hear. One of the biggest reasons I can't work in a quiet room with others is because I feel as though everyone can hear my every breathe and it bugs me to the point where I know I won't get anything done.

  60. I have probably the easiest time when it comes to speaking in front of people. So If I had to come up with a small five minute speech for one of my classes it wouldn't be a problem. I am very grateful or my first high school, High Tech High. Although I wasn't able to graduate from there I did take a lot with me. One of those things were how to talk in front of a crowd of people. It is super easy to me and has come in handy on more than one occasion. At school I can see where I excel in speaking in front of other while my classmates aren't that comfortable. I would like to help them.

  61. Chapter 3:
When it comes to studying for a challenging math test, I go over the practice test multiple times. I find similar problems to the practice test from homework assignments, and just attempt all the math problems until I learn how to do them without reviewing my notes. When I think I have it all down, I normally go over the practice test online that some websites offer like Pearson.

  62. Chapter 3:
My ideal study environment is early morning at a Starbucks. Test day or a few days before a test, I wake up around 6:30 or 7:00am and I head to Starbucks. I grab a coffee and sit at one of the tables and dive into my work. Generally I wear a sweater to keep warm, because I hate studying in the cold. I start with chapter summaries, then go over review guides that the teacher provides.

  63. So according to the profiler I have a ton of majors that would be perfect for me. Out of the many I have to choose from on the online profiler I liked the idea of majoring in something artistic such as graphic design and pretty much anything that has to do with using the computer. I could totally see myself going through to the end and majoring in one these fields. Also one of the majors in the artistic field is acting and I could see myself going into this field and becoming a voice actor. I would love to be that memorable voice to a childs favorite character, just as Peter Cullen has been to me by playing the voice of Optimus Prime.

  65. In a couple years I plan to graduate from cuyamaca and transfer to san Francisco state university to study kinesiology. I want to specialize in rehabilitating sports related injuries. I know what it's like to be injured having played football in high school and I believe that I could help people a lot in this career. My goal is to attain a masters degree in kinesiology so that I could own my own physical therapy center and gym. But for right now I'm just concentrating on getting my 2 year degree then my bachelors. I hope be able to visit my friends frequently throughout school, because my goal is to not become overwhelmed with school, work, and my relationship. Everything is going well for me i just have to keep my nose to grind stone and do my best to be successful in school.
